I am about to install windows 7. I had the RC on my system, but removed it due to driver issues, huge choke ingame and other stuff which was not cool. Before I install it I want to hear from you if you have any complaints about w7 on a gaming system?
I forgot to add another question: what are the advantages / disadvantages of installing the 64bit version?

Have been running it for about a week now and haven’t had any problems at all.

Haven’t had any problems with any of the versions since beta, well at least none that I wouldn’t have gotten on XP/Vista.
My WLan card doesnt work with it (neither of the two that i bought do……………)
But yeah, it sucks for TF2 in my experience but for all other games its a 110% improvement. And ive used it for so long i cant remember if my choke in TF2 is anything to do with the OS or if its to do with my shitty router.
I’ve ran windows 7 in Beta, RC and OEM final and the only time I ever had problems with TF2 was when I installed the game from a steam backup.
When I did a fresh download everything is fine, performs better than it did on XP.
Other games are great, I can even run System Shock 2 and run it perfectly without any tweaking/changing affinities, which I couldn’t on XP.
No problems with it in any game or with any program whatsoever.
I havent had any issues with any software such as adobe master collection cs3, office 07 suite, or issues with any pre-dated drivers etc on windows 7 professional, good OS so far :), except it likes to disconnect my BT hub sometimes.. just randomly, not sure why? Started happening after i installed it.
I have a windows 7 64-bit OS key if anyone wants it.. get it free for studying IT but i can only use the 32-bit.
Tf2 crashes instantly and aero doesn’t work. So I’m still stuck with vista.

:O I may have win7 soon, but if I had known you had that id have put dips on it :O
I’ve been using it since last year jan/feb or whenever the first public beta was released (build 7000). It worked really well, I had no problems, I could watch any video in WMP, without having to install any additional codecs.
Then came the second public beta (build 7100). With that I had some problems. First of all the drivers for my x-fi didn’t work properly, there was a memory leak, window’s audiodg.exe used about 2-2.5 gb of my memory. So very often my computer froze due to the memory filling up. I had to use my onboard sound card instead. Video codec support hasn’t been nearly as good in this build than it was in build 7000. Also build 7100 hasn’t felt as smooth and snappy as build 7000.
Build 7000 was amazing, it worked really well.
Build 7100 has been a lot worse and I hope that the retail version is like build 7000.
I’m most likely buying windows 7 instead of going back to xp, but xp is still a viable option due to the RC being fucking shit. This is just my opinion…
W7 thread again?
The average user won’t run into any problems what so ever, and if you do run into problems they can be solved 99% of the time by googling or asking here, unless it’s not actually a W7 issue
Unless you have a very low end system there’s no reason to not install the 64-bit version… You can use more than 3.5 GB RAM, you can run demanding applications faster if they support 64-bit mode, and just making your computer future proof overall.
I would very much appreciate that key shifty, this OS is starting to run pretty slow so I’ll be making the switch in a week or so. Can I get you on IRC? (Kolox on quakenet)
I’m having massive fps problems with w7, also bigger ping and lots of choke (0choke and about 80-100 bigger fps with xp :D)
dunno whats wrong, i’ve tried to disable lots of features (aero, uac or whatever its called etc). This is latest w7 version dl yesterday from microsoft. other than tf2 it works well and love it.
Any tips from old w7 users how to get this perform better with tf2 :p?
e6400 @ 2.13ghz, 3GB ram and nvidia 9500 so dunno if its just my pc or what
ps. this is my 1st go with w7 and never tried vista so all tips are welcomed

for the note: if u had ping problem in RC, u will have it now, they havnt done anything about it so far… but…there is a fix: http://www.quakeworld.nu/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=50618
on the other note, how to improve performance on w7:
a) -fullscreen
b) fps_max 0
c) -high
c2) -freq 100 -novid -noforcemaccel -noforcemparms -noforcemspd -condebug -noborder -heapsize 1572864 (remove what u dont need)
d) dont use hlsw/hldj/that kind of stuff, def 20fps less… preferably launch tf2 from ur steam, not rocket dock or that kind of thing as it has different resource managing
e) forgot
lol more, i dont understand why would u want to move to w7 with such crappy pc, i mean, it barely can start w7 with aero
Animal just likes to hate on Win7, obviously had a massive fail with it in RC
Personally used it over 3 different machines from Beta, RC, and now Final, 32 bit on two and 64 bit on one, unless your PC is very old, or has 1 gig of ram, you may as well install 64 bit.
Wireless handling was far better in win7 for my PCs needing it, though it was still pretty much fail, like on XP ^^, the ones on cable never had any ping issues or anything, FPS got an increase in everything, even tf2, basically, unless your PC hates you, Win7 is pro.
