Performance in games (i7 920 vs amd 965)

The i7 beats the 965 pretty much in every game. The i7 is also a lot faster in other tasks like video rendering.
And those reviews aren’t really “fair”, if both processors were running at the same speed then the i7 would be faster by a large margin.
You can easily clock the i7 920 to the clock speed that the amd 965 is running at and even higher. Just read a tutorial on some overclocking forum.
Even if you don’t decide to overclock, the i7 is faster (but you really should overclock it :D)
And change the 5770 to this one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-219-AS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1515. It’s the same price and ASUS branded and its got 3 years of warranty instead of 1.

George complaining about lag to cover up your poor aim wont get you into division 2!!
Edited Salmons rig = http://img248.imageshack.us/i/poot.jpg/
With VAT final price = £647
Im going to go with that i think unless anyone else can suggest anything to trump that.
I guess in the future as you say i can add a 2nd gfx car if needed + add more ram.

i never said the AMD processor was better, i did say it was cheaper which is better for the budget, while still having good in-game performance and being 80 quid cheaper
the price reflects the performance, which in my mind is nothing but logical
secondly, its not really fair to say that the reviews aren’t “fair”, its logical that the i7 runs at a diffrent clock because its a different architecture, and while the i7 can easily reach 3.4ghz its about stock speeds, not about how it responds after an overclock of about 20%, because again, both processors have a different architecture.

£673.28 (inc shipping)You get 2 copies of Dirt 2 with that setup, which you can sell for ~55£ making the setup cost about 600 £.
I don’t know about the graphics card, you could just as well choose an ATI 4890 (they are pretty much the same). However the 5770 has DX 11 support, which the 4-series doesn’t have. And later on you could buy another 5770 / 4890 and crossfire them and improve the performance a lot. The i7 D0 overclocks really well, you could most likely get it to 4 ghz.
You might also need a 1/2 fans for the antec 300.
don’t go with amd
intel i7> anything
Why go for a very expensive cpu (that will have no extra performance over a Phenom II/i5 when it comes to gaming) and pair it with a rather low end graphics card?
Yes, you get some extra frames from the cpu, but when you’ve got something like an i5, you’re way beyond the point where a cpu would limit your performance.
The extra 10fps that i7 920 gives aren’t worth such a shitload of extra money imo.
I wouldn’t recommend s1366 to anyone unless they’re very serious about graphics
work or modelling.
Rather spend the money on a better gpu, an SSD, or a really good monitor (as in not-some-rubbish-Samsung-TN-panel-monitor)

And this is coming from an i7 owner.
Cheapest way to get hardware is to win it :D:D

Cheapest way to ruin hardware is to vomit all over it :D:D
Xtala my belgie friend care to make a pc worth of 600+- pounds on overclockers.co.uk or novatech.co.uk? :)

Actually i7 gives you the benefits of multi-gpu, being D0 stepping, and will also run i9 should it lower in price at the time you eventually want to upgrade again.

nvm, saw tapley didn’t care for future proofing
I would go for something like this:
Asus ATI Radeon HD 5850 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £240.99
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 965 Black Edition 3.40GHz (Socket AM3) £145.9
Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-650TXUK) £76.99
Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 AMD 770 Motherboard £60.98
Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case – Black £42.99
Total : £581.45
The alternative is to switch up the Phenom with an i5. It is a question of GFX vs CPU. Where you want to put your budget.
Have a look in this article, might give you some pointers:

Im ok with spending a bit more moneys, which i5 CPU/Mobo combo would you suggest?

Plan on clocking?
I have good experience with the Asus motherboards, which model to choose depends on your budget and how much you plan on clocking.
