Every morning at 7:18 a.m., Smelly stood on the same cracked tile at the edge of the platform, coffee warming his hands as much as his nerves. The routine was comforting in a dull, dependable way. It also meant he knew exactly when she would arrive.

Mugen always boarded the third car.

She stepped onto the train like she belonged to the motion of it—coat loose, hair never quite tamed, eyes already somewhere beyond the windows. Sometimes she read, sometimes she just watched the city wake up, and sometimes she looked tired in a way that made Smelly wonder what kind of dreams kept her up at night. He learned these details without ever speaking a word to her.

They sat across from each other often. Not on purpose. Just often enough to make it feel intentional. There was always space between them—an empty seat, a pole, an invisible wall built from hesitation. Smelly filled that space with imagined conversations. He practiced them silently, refining lines that would never leave his throat.

    Good morning.
    What are you reading?
I see you here a lot too.

    Every time, the moment passed.

One morning the train stalled between stations. The lights dimmed, people sighed, phones came out. Mugen looked up from her book, annoyed, then smiled to herself like she’d expected nothing less from the day. Smelly noticed the way she tucked her bookmark in with care, as if even delays deserved respect.

She glanced around, searching for someone to share the inconvenience with.

    Her eyes almost met his.

    Smelly looked away.

The train lurched forward again, carrying them on like nothing had happened. At the next stop, she stood, adjusted her bag, and stepped off. Smelly watched her disappear into the crowd, a familiar ache settling in his chest.

The next day, she wasn’t there.

Maybe she took a different train. Maybe her schedule changed. Maybe life simply moved on, the way it always did. Smelly still stood on his cracked tile at 7:18, still boarded the same car, still left an empty seat across from him without realizing it.

Some stories don’t end with beginnings.
    Some people remain almosts.

And every morning after, as the train pulled away from the platform, Smelly carried the quiet knowledge that courage doesn’t haunt you when it fails—only when it’s never tried.
