Good :) Was surprised to hear it was still happening after you uninstalled the IOBIt Startmenu thing, as that is a common cause for windows 8 users.

I had this for maybe 6-8 weeks on and off. I read forums for a long time, i reinstalled windows and did everything steam support told me. No result.
I found the issue was iObit which was a overlay for the windows 8 start button. I uninstalled this and fixed. Make sure you uninstall all applications that run in the background all the time because that was my problem. My friend also has iObit installed and he never had the same problem as i did. Looks like this is completely random and is different to all computers.

Hey, well I guess it's time to isolate where the issue is then. Close all non-essential apps currently running, so only the necessary services/apps is running the background, to keep windows running. If the issue still occurs, I would say you need to run a full chkdsk to solve the issue, although it's quite rare for that to be the cause of this.

If you are interested, I can also take a closer look at your setup, by providing me a HPSreport (For windows 8, download the one for windows server 2012 x64): http://update.external.hp.com/HPS/HPSreports/ - When running the .exe, it will collect a bundle of logs and put it in a .CAB file. Send that .CAB file to me, with a dropbox link or whatever you prefer.

Hello :)

If you've tried all solutions from this page already: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2117-ILZV-2837&l=english I believe this to be an external app that's causing it. Understand that this system is crashing because of an external app/external factor interfering with the VAC system, so this error is very generic. If you completely reinstalled your Windows and only installed drivers the issue would most likely not be there. Point being: Check what you have running in the background, and see if anything matches the conflicting software list here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9828-SFLZ-9289 (The ones marked with a green * is the one you should look out for). I can highly recommend using process explorer, to get a clear overview of what you have running: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-ie/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

As a long shot, you could also try running a chkdsk /f /r /b to see if it finds anything. Maybe the filesystem is damaged in such a way, steam won't function correctly.

Not sure why people cannot google though.

"Enable DEP

Data Execution Prevention (DEP) must be enabled to play on VAC secured servers. To restore DEP settings to default please follow the steps below:

    Exit Steam.
Click the Start button, then 'All Programs', and 'Accessories'
Right-click on Command Prompt and click "Run as administrator..."
    - Please note if you are running Windows 8 you will need to press Windows Key + X and select Command Prompt (Admin)
In the command prompt, type the following command and press Enter:
    bcdedit.exe /deletevalue nx
    Restart your computer.
Launch Steam and test the issue again."

In addition stick these in the cmd pressing enter after each one:

bcdedit /deletevalue nointegritychecks
bcdedit /deletevalue loadoptions
bcdedit /debug off

Then restart your computer.

You just have to find the file (use Windows search) and then run->cmd and type the full path or cd to that directory (maybe need to run as administrator, so find windows->accessories->msdos prompt and right click, run as admin).
