What do you mean by saying "plugged in"? You mean the power cable? If you do, then yes, it is.

On my old mb, the onboard soundcard thingy got a flip and did the same thing. Not sure if that's your problem though.
Try uninstalling the shit you installed, and reinstalling/downgrading the drivers for the sound if that's possible
I fixed it by buying a cheap Creative soundcard and used that instead

edit: also, it's a totally new laptop?
I doubt it's the hardware then, but if you've tried fiddling around with wires and the ports, drivers etc. Then idk

So here's the thing - I have recently bought a laptop (3 days ago) and until yesterday it was all fine but after I had installed some additional software (media player classic, winrar e.t.c.) and updated my AMD Video Driver my audio started crackling and stuttering about every 15-20 seconds whether it is a video, a song or a game. I tried reinstalling audio drivers and codecs a bunch of times but it didn't help.

My laptop:
TOSHIBA L855-14H
i7-3630QM
AMD HD7670M
4GB DDR3 1600 MHz

P.S. I have windows 7.
