So I buy a new router and try to set it up...no dice. I ring my ISP, (Sky), and find out that I can't use a router I buy, it has to be one of theirs... New one turned up today for free.

Note to self: Always ring ISP before buying new router...

For a basic home router, the WRT54GL ( http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/Reviews.asp?ProductID=3099 ) is definitely the hot shot at the moment (and has been for almost 7 years now). Cheap, you can run OpenWRT/Tomato on it, very stable. I've had mine for 6 years, in that time I've rebooted it twice (and both of those times it was because I had to turn it off due to redecorating). Mine currently has an uptime of 500 days, yowza! As for a modem, I really do recommend the Zoom X4 ( http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=645 ), also very stable, never had any problems with it. I really recommend running the modem as a striaght DMZ to the router, it's flawless.

Seriously, don't bother with the E4200, it's pointless.

Looking to spend a decent amount (£100-£200), strong wireless signal/coverage would be a priority and streaming movies to various laptops etc.

I use Netgear Powerline adaptors for the desktop units.

The router I have is Netgear too but it's a notoriously bad model and on its last legs... always dropping internal connections and needing reboots.

really depends on what you plan to do with.

do you need large wireless coverage?
are you streaming HD content all over your wireless devices?
are you gonna use the NAS / UPNP Media Server capabilities? (do you have DLNA clients?)

If you are not going to share "big stuff" between your wireless devices internally, the great bandwith will be good for nothing, when your Internet Connection can't keep up.

If you want to improve your Connection for Gaming, you will probably be better off just getting a wired connection. (assuming you're on wifi now)

So I need a new router. Got a hundred or so to spend. Should I bother with something like this at 120 or just go for a simpler one and get a copy of battlefield 3 as well?

Is dual band worth forking out for or should I just get a basic one? I have no idea what kind of effect a router can have on a connection, I've only ever used the free one I got when I first got an ISP on board, will I notice any difference if I pay a bit?

Help please.
