It really depends what you are going to do with the computer. If you have video editing programs, multiple browsers, tf2, startcraft and photoshop editing all at the same time, get 6gb, if only gaminng, 4gb.

TBH it would probably be better if you asked a pc building forum such as aria's or overclocked gaming or whatever they are called. They will be able to give direct links to products and advice on compatability which is very necessary. (It would suck to realise your ram doesnt work with the mobo or something).

i5 2500K is pretty simple in terms of compatibility, you need to make sure the motherboard is socket 1155, and then find out whether the motherboard takes dual channel or triple channel ram. Then you see if the RAM you have chosen is dual/triple channel, and check whether it uses 1.5V and you are done.

As for your last paragraph, that is quite bitter, people who buy that much RAM tend to be PC enthusiasts, not what you have said. You should never go 6GB unless your motherboard is triple channel, in which case 3x2GB is a good idea. If you have double channel, get 2x2GB or 2x4GB as dual channel mode tends to run faster.

No. RAM, in contrary to most PC parts change their prices up and down depending on exchange rates, supply and demand. VGAs and CPUs keep going down in prices because there is always a new architecture every half-year/year, first time DDR3 RAM architecture introduced was like 4 years ago, new RAM sticks and speeds are for enthusiasts and not concerning the market's majority. No need too buy 1600Mhz memories, you wont run them in 1600 anyway, and they have no performance increase, take the cheapest memories you can find. If they already are the cheapest then its okay :)

RAM prices go down, just like all other components. The process they're made on gets ever smaller, so there is in fact new "architectures" (process shrinks) similar in steps to intels "ticks". Essentially the ram analogy of intels tick tock model is more like Tock Tick Tick Tick Tick Tock Tick.... The reason the price change is so bumpy with RAM is because the RAM producers have a tendency to flood the market (look at the taiwanese manufacturers).
