Best choice probably. A little above your budget, but worth the price bump. You'll end up with "budget entry of a higher segment"-speakers, instead of "fancy trash segment"-speakers. Or what Koeitje says, quality bookshelf speakers with a seperate amp; both 2nd hand because there's so much sick value for your money on the used market. What's your price range? I'll have to admit I'm not the best when it comes to this but bought a Corsair SP2500 and couldn't be happier. Clear and crisp sound for all music and games and a very reasonable price for the performance (about 220€, probably cheaper in other countries). The JBL speaker you had are much cheaper though so just wondering what you are able to pay.
