I get this issue too. Somehow with every update I get a dip in fps, when everything works perfectly normal before it :/

Okay, as it seems it is something network related I guess. When I play snowie's benchmark demo with every setting at default I get around 200 fps. When I crank up every setting to the max, I get around 175 fps. (both give the best result with multicore rendering enabled). According to the timedemo command, it only has a very small variance in fps. I haven't noticed a thing about this when really playing tf2.

And since the only difference between a demo and actual playing is the network part..
Any further suggestions?

Since I just noticed that the framerate drops only occur when changing from an area, for instance when moving through a door to an outdoor part of a map, I thought could it perhaps be some kind of slowness in loading the models/particles when you enter the specific visleaf? Would there be a convar for this?

I have, I could try running tf2 without them, but I do not think this will solve the problem because tf2 has worked just fine in the past with the old driver.
Quoted from AnimaL

[...]thats not the same, u actually dont have good enough cpu

anyway, there was some ati thread where ppl were whining about exactly same problem, so i suspect its the ati drivers

although, you should always check usual suspects for such fps lags: 1) antivirus 2) mumble overlay 3) trying running on single core (mat_queue_mode -2)

Don't know about the ATI drivers, I just installed the most recent ones (11.4)
1. AV was turned off (It's McAfee btw).
2. It usually happens in pubs, so no mumble.
3. Single core does not affect it or makes it worse very slightly.

As far as I can see through the task manager my cpu load is always under 50% when playing the fps drops occur. And since lowering the ingame settings does not affect it either... Could it be network related or something similar?
