I connect to the server and begin to time out as soon as I get on.

Start up TF2 with -clientport 27016 in the launch options one on of the computers (not both)

Tried it on my PC only, his PC only and then one with port 27016 and one with 27017 and none worked.

Quoted from Waebi

if that doesn't try changing yourself and him from DMZ to auto-assigned (DHPC) and see if that changes anything.

Done - no difference, I was in DMZ just to get around port forwarding for games where I needed to host (Worms, Borderlands etc)

last time when i was trying some networking software and have put my ip in dmz and had similar problem (one of my house mates plays a lot of tf2 and usually at same time as me). when I have disabled the dmz, the problem disappeared however i never understood how could it affect connection to tf2 server (as far as i know dmz should be the issue solver - not the issue, but rather extreme solution)

try restoring defaults on your router (make sure to backup the setings) and use automatic dhcp addresses. I'll say it again: I don't think it should fix anything (not in networking terms) but it did for me.

Are you sure it was switch? As in just a bog-standard unmanaged switch? There is absolutely no reason by any logic of networking that would make a difference. :s

If this still keeps you from playing it might be an issue with QoS or weird exclusive port forwarding.
Try to reset your router settings or just clean them up.
