I had the exact same problem for over a year and I tried everything to fix it. The thing that worked for me after trying so many things was underclocking my graphics card. I used ATITool.

Never happens anymore, which is such a relief. Don't notice any difference in fps either really.

Before Core: 600 Memory: 900
After    Core: 500 Memory: 700

They are the only settings I've tried and they worked. Maybe you can underclock it less and it will work for you, but mine works just fine with those settings.

Seriously, you're problems are exactly the same as i had. Freezing, looping sound then the game resumes after about a minute but there is ALOT of artifacting. Restart the game or alt in and out and it's fine. In all the researching I did I never saw someone with problems so identical to mine so I suggest you try underclocking.

Hope this helps.

Tried that, doesn't work. Also no idea how old the card is exactly. Might actually really be just dying on me :(

@Fox
Everything else runs fine on the computer. I tired using my friends graphic card and it worked fine, though we couldn't test mine in his computer because it's a tiny bit too big...

So in the end my graphic card is dying and there is no way around it other than buying a new one? :/

Hmm I wonder, whenever I had a problem with my graphics card (and only the graphics card), the graphics were screwed, but never ever did my sound loop / stop, even if the rest froze.
So I assume it might also have to do with your motherboard. But I can't say for sure of course. You might try and update your motherboard drivers.

Have you checked all the other temperatures of your computer (CPU and so on)? Oh and you might wanna open up your computer and get rid of all the dust inside. That helps once in a while, too.

Other than that, I can't think of anything else.
Your best bet would be to narrow the problem. Maybe you have a friend who could help you, exchange your graphics card and test if the problem persists. At least that's what I would do before buying a new graphics card, just to find out that it didn't solve the problem.

You say it never used to happen, surprised nobody's suggested it yet, but roll back the drivers to last update (and if you can't, uninstall, and reinstall an older version).

Looking at that though, I wouldn't be surprised if the card is dying, how old is it?
