Well I agree the headsets are probably better value without a "decent" soundcard, I think you're overestimating the price of the soundcard that would make a difference:

Asus Xonar D1 7.1@£53
Asus Xonar DS 7.1@£36

Throw in a set of Goldring DR100s
edit I'll leave this link in - but these headphones are not good for anything using a lot sustained bass (sound effects from games will be fine, but long synth might not) - if you're planning on using speakers for music anyway then that shouldn't be a problem. But in any case - just thought that these fit your price range - ideally you'd want to get the DR150s but then you're looking at £60+ just for the headphones and no soundcard...

Siberia valued at £71 on steelseries site (Euros converted)

Not saying the route I suggest is the best route for you to go down - obviously getting the sound card will mean it is always going to be a bit more expensive - just trying to suggest some options available to you :)

Ye, I do have an onboard sound card. As much I'd like to, I just don't see how £50-70 is justified for a sound card when the only purpose is gaming. As I said, im not too concerned for music as personally, Ive found that a good set of speakers with a nice sub will far exceed any set of headphones.

Im really keen on the Sibera v2 tbh, I love Sennheiser, infact at the moment im using Sennheiser headphones for my PC/MP3 Player, just I know its a waste of money without investing in a sound card and thats then pushing £140 potentially and i'm just not up for spending that.

Any comments on the Steelseries 5Hv2?

Yeah but considering my main experience is with the HD595s at around £110 that's significantly more than the Siberia's, which without a separate sound card (with virtualisation etc.) is difficult to justify.

Also apparently - someone dissected the 555s and 595s and seems to think they're identical bar a small bit of plastic in the 555s that alters the soundstage slightly...

If by decent you mean an onboard one :s
Can easily hear the difference in general use(movies/music), games also sound better but I don't know about the steelseries "directional sound" stuff, haven't really noticed the difference. So yeah, I'd say the Sennheiser HD's are superior even with standard onboard cards that most people probably use but this also shows in the price.
I've had HD555, two pairs of HD595 and SS 5hv2.

While I have to agree with the comment about the Siberia's sound quality compared to higher end "audiophile" sets (or even midrange ones) the build quality, in my experience, was fine.

In my opinion the Sennheiser HD555s (~£70) and HD595s(~£110) are great sets of headphones that really produce brilliant sound quality - but you really wont see the difference between this and your standard gaming headsets unless you have a decent sound card. Well you might see some difference, but it wouldn't be worth the extra money.

Comfort-wise I can only speak about the HD595s as they're the only ones I have used for long periods of time, but given that the frame of both the HD555 and HD595 are pretty similar I would guess this is true for both pairs.

So my advice would be
- if you have a good sound card Sennheiser HD555s (or Goldring DR150 actually ~£60) would be a great choice and you really will be able to tell the difference.

- if you don't have a dedicated sound card and rely on onboard sound then go with a Siberia as they seem to get great reviews.

Mic-wise the usual recommendation is to get the cheap Elara Clip-On mic, however in my experience of it it's a bit crap and picks up way too much on background noise - particularly if you're clipping it near to an open headset. The zalman clip on (the name escapes me) is pretty good but I can't find a Europeon vendor for it.

So yeah... that ^
