Had it too, couldnt close the game = take off any launch option ( only console should be fine ) and i had to delete my quantum cfg , still checking whats the freezing command . After delete didnt have any problems. Probably something wrong with ram options/multicore/ragdoll ( for me . )

( edit : first time i tought was the hud , but its not :/ so the problem isnt in resources/scripts)

You might be describing the same problem i had earlier (today) with tf2.

Step 1) Download and install Nem's GCFScape - http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/index.php?p=26
Step 2) Open up Team Fortress 2 Content.gcf (X:/X/Steam/steamapps)
Step 3) Move the tf/scripts/hudreslayout from the Team Fortress 2 Content.gcf to X:/X/Steam/steamapps/username/team fortress 2 tf scripts - Overwrite the old file.
Step 4) Move the tf/resources/ui - ChatScheme.res - ClienScheme.res and SourceScheme from the Team Fortress 2 Content.gcf to X:/X/Steam/steamapps/username/team fortress 2/tf/resources - Overwrite the old file.

Step 5) ???????

Step 6) Profit!

This worked for me at least, i had the same problem, each time i died, my game froze, and tf2 crashed. glhf
