It also boils down to what you define as an extremist. I define a religious extremist as someone who is willing to kill for his god or religion - that is not to say that he's doing so, but that he thinks certain conditions provided by his belief/scriptures allow or condone killings in the name of that belief.

If people say murder is okay because the conditions of their religion for allowing it is met, then no, they're extremists. Not active extremists, but their viewpoints are indeed extreme.

This is not a definition accepted by most muslims I've spoken with, because that would mean they actually belong to the extremist group and they cannot accept that, as they also believe extremists are wrong. From experience muslims are easily offended and feel threatened if their religion is mocked, but I don't think that has anything to do with Islam, but that it's more a cultural phenomenon.

Most Muslims I've met accept the definition of extremist as someone who bends reality to fit the conditions provided by their scriptures, when the conditions aren't met in actuality. Is one more right than the other? To have a divine license to kill seems absurd as far as I'm concerned. But as I said, once the Muslim part of the world has attained industrialization, more technology, more developed/stable economy and a solid educational system, I believe we'll see less and less of extremists, but Islam will become a lifestyle choice and a community, much like today's Christianity.

Think what Foxtreme has stated is quite true and correct. <3 Fox

Bjuo you have a valid point by far, an "actual" muslim respects other's belief, an actual extremist of Islam will not (which mean hes not a muslim, hes a extremist =))

Cheers

Maybe in 50/100 years, whenever, Europe will be full of muslims... so what? I'm not muslim, nor catholic, and I don't care what people want to believe.

I think what berserking god said is quite right... part of the muslim culture nowadays isn't different from christian culture of a few centurys ago. The problem is that they replaced swords with bombs, missiles and nukes.

And btw jews != muslims :p

In regards to people who are worried about Islamic extremism in terms of supporting jihad and violence in the name of Allah (to infidels or enemies of Allah, whatever you'd want to call it), in considering the Muhammad caricatures, you should give it some time.

Basically, how it's been explained to me is just that you cannot expect them to comprehend things from this society due to communicating at completely different wavelengths. It can be explained in terms of Maslow's hierarchy of needs, in that you cannot expect the highest level to appear before the foundation is laid.

In countries like Iraq and Iran where the majority are illiterate and poorly educated, the concept of freedom of speech (which is just what was exercised with the aforementioned caricatures, but it still elicited a reaction of fury from the Islamic population, even in established countries) is way above their heads.

It's also a point to note that religion has not always been very important in these countries, in fact women wore jeans and hair out all the time not that many years back (I can verify the exact range with my dad if anyone's that interested), but the level of seriousness in religion has been highly elevated from that point onwards. One should expect that once properly industrialized and established, granting technological and economical prosperity to the countries, and once they have a solid system of education they will climb the hierarchy of needs, become more open to criticism and reflection, and then appreciate concepts such as freedom of speech.

It's only because the Christian part of the world had this happen to them before, the Muslim culture is not anymore or less savage (if anyone were to think that just because of what they've seen from the media) than Christians were, but due to resources and expansion, etc. the Christians were the ones who stopped their crusades first and got to that point. Now it's the industrialized world's responsibility to bring everyone else up on that level, as communicating concepts that go way above or below one's head is meaningless.

That's my two cents.
