Quoted from Dummy

okay, I figured out what the AI problem is
basically if you have walls, it will send 2-3 units to burn your gates down early on (later in the game, but like supa late, they get onagers / towers / ladders etc.). if you rout those 2-3 units which is very easy, the rest of the army will not react and will stand there until the time runs out

the game is still rather boring, as it is IMPOSSIBLE to lose when Rome even on the hard settings unless you try to.

Shit tons of bugs of course, some big ones:
slave revolts don't actually do anything
the slaves revolt, a huge army appears in your province(s), but it does not do anything, disappears about 1-2 turns later. your income does not suffer too so it doesn't matter at all
the predictions are god awful for battles - size matters only, not unit skill, so a veteran legion full of elite units will lose against (if auto'd) an army 3x its size but made of peons

the politics are useless - if they DO matter, it's impossible to tell how.

champions are incredibly OP due to the xp they give an army

I'm glad that they fixed a lot of the inane shit though, diplomacy actually has depth now unless you go around betraying everybody, then it doesn't matter since nobody will trust you.
The combination of land and sea battles in one is very nice and adds another level of depth
sieges are better, the AI is fine when defending

it ain't a bad game over-all but it's a bit simplified and has some shitty things about it, I'd advise waiting 6 months to a year for the good mods to come out - maybe a roma surrectum 3 or ER 2

Thanks a lot good writeup :P

Roman units do seem a bit OP, basically all of their units are awesome - though other factions get some sweet abilities.

Slave revolts are the reasons you constantly see 'a new faction has risen' in the event bar - i've never seen an army 'disappear', either, and from my experience rebel armies will not attrition and in fact keep recruiting units until you do something about them.

predictions deeefinitely involve experience/general level, though they are still bugged - a lot of predictions will make it seem like i'm gonna get stomped then i get a 'heroic victory' even when it wasn't too hard.

champions are a bit OP, but the other guys significantly reduce army upkeep so it's not always an easy choice when leveling people up in fights is so easy and makes so little difference. half the time the next level infantry base stats will be higher than a level 9 rank unit. another reason the predictions probably aren't altered too much by experience.

Actually the revolts do something. They give extra happiness and you can keep them away from doing anything forever, so they essentially help you out.

My direct experience with Total War games is limited to Shogun 2, but:

- in Shogun 2 I could never lay siege more than one turn without them coming out to fight me, which was preferable than attacking a city so I never bothered. In Rome 2 you both suffer attrition if you lay siege, so attacking straight up is viable and they don't always rally out to fight you.
- haven't seen any unit tomfoolery yet
- in combat, i've not been on the receiving end of a city siege but settlement sieges have been "i have a wall of units i'm going to walk at you" affairs [to clarify: provinces are split up into 2-4 settlements, one of them will be a walled city and others will be unwalled settlements]

Yeah, there's some 'alpha vegetation' thing that seriously impedes performance which I think is separate to vegetation, too.
