I think I'll put this off (and trying hammer too) until I'm a little more settled with tf2; my team's a bit of a mess right now and a new card is not what I need right now to make the game fun.

They work, but don't expect amazing performance. The passive cooling doesn't really do a great job when stuff gets real hot (literally).

If you go for this sort of stuff, better make sure you have a good case with good airflow.

AMD drivers (even on linux) are decent now.

Considering you're on micro? ATX (not sure if mini or micro, micro should be abbreviated as µATX) a newer more power efficient GPU would probably be better than a older high TDP GPU (i don't trust µATX cases in terms of airflow). Plus a new GPU is guaranteed to work, used ones aren't.

Anyway you should be able to get a GT 630 or a Radeon 6670, maybe a 7750 if you're lucky for less than 50£.

Been thinking about getting a graphics card since I read this. I thought my TF2 ran fine with my current setup, but along the way of installing sourceSDK, it asked me for my graphics memory and I realised I have 256mb when the cheapest ones on ebuyer easily out-do that. (Though I know intel integrated graphics do some trickery with shared memory.)

I've been advised I stick with nvidia some friends who use linux, and I want to be pretty strict about the total cost being below £50.

Current setup: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/zoostorm-desktop-pc-intel-pentium-dc-g860-3ghz-8gb-ram-1tb-hdd-dvdrw-intel-hd-no-1389063 Intel Pentium DC G860 3GHz, 8GB RAM, Intel HD

tl;dr anyone know any dos and don'ts of buying older/lower end GPUs?
