It's an autopilot and stats thingy. I'd ignore it to start with and learn to fly these things manually first. I do use the Kerbal Engineer redux which will give you details on your craft as you build it, such as delta v by stage and thrust to weight ratios. Really useful. I just got the Procedural fairings last night as well for making my rockets look like sperms or dildos, which is the idea for ALL space races as far as I know. The mod community is huge for this game, there's extra parts and so much stuff you can add into the game already.
