that's exactly one of the phones I meant you may need to root so problems go away, i heard many have lag problems with it etc. Might be wrong though, but then again why are there so many topics on "galaxy S lag fix"...

the first build of software was laggy and needed a fix (which could be resolved with a simple download of an app on the market - no rooting required) this was fixed ages ago and no longer requires any rooting/modifications - i have a stock froyo galaxy s and it runs like a dream

ps. norris, check out this site http://forum.xda-developers.com/ there are some amazing developers on these forums and most phones already have the latest 2.3 update available from the developers

The problem here is that you *have to* install and change stuff. For example, have a look at my phone. It's latest update available for it is android 2.1. New apps require 2.2 (to be installed on the SD card f.e), even the Google ones.

So you either have the option to be left out (when it comes down to new apps) or have something which doesn't run fine (because it's custom) or you just take a product which works like the ones from apple.

I dont use Apple at all, but I was under the impression that Apple charge for major updates (compared to free for Android)? And not all iPhones are capable of getting the latest update anyway... and to get that update you need a new phone (similar to android)?

It's a very weak argument in any case. Of course older phones get obsolete, that's one thing that even Apple has demonstrated very well with yearly updates to their product range. As I said, I don't use Apple at all, but the 3GS afaik introduced stronger graphics capabilities - so some games / apps that were designed for the 3GS wouldn't run on the 3G. Similar story for 4 vs 3GS. It's a fact of life.

Also, you left out an important option at the end: staying stock, and everything is working (HTC Desire).

if you want a phone that just works then dont root and let everything stock.
if you want to tinker around you root and install all the custom stuff but stability will go down :D

i have android since over 2 years now and my first device was a HTC Magic and it was totaly unstable after all the custom roms thats why i bought a desire HD and rooted it but dont stay @ stock ROM

I'm comparing as you say, and I have no problems with my android phone for everything I use it for. But you are probably somewhat correct when referring to fragmentation of android & devices, and on top of that, the option of the carrier to add their own bloat onto the device - this doesn't help.

However, with that said, android devices typically offer a much higher degree of flexibility - whether it is hardware or software. It's up to an individual whether or not they want that, or if they would rather have a closed system (apple).

I don't know what you mean by "test and optimise" - unless you are referring to people using custom roms. And updates - Really?

also gimpfen get your facts straight, rooting has nothing to do with it at all. There are devices that are shit without rooting but great when rooted, and if you install custom ROMs then you're not a customer that expects everything to work flawlessly anyway - in fact, there are plenty of custom ROMs that are even more stable than stock stuff.

it happens only if you start to root your device.
if you dont root and everything is stock it just works :D
