IMHO,

OC the CPU brings more benefit with CPUs in 2.1G - 2.8@ above the benefit of OC cpu is not so significant. The more important is how fast your CPU push data via memory to NB/SB and to PCIx buses aka to your graphic card and how fast the card process those.
"cache" size/speed matters too... so it is not only about raw numbers, more like complete set of HW have to work together....

Check the tom's hardware, the link i post above, there is quite huge analysis including overclocking such a cpus, it might be usefull to decide if it is better to get new cpu or gpu (or complete pc:)

As well the aproach of the test is two way (from cpu and gpu point of views...) so there werre about 36 testing sets (exlcuding OC variations) ....

cheers

Nah water cooling is just some fun for overclocking geeks really imo.
Good air cooling is pretty good these days.
A better heatsink and fan is a good investment.
Think I have one of these :

I'm running an e7200 2.53ghz @ 3.6Ghz With an ati 4850
Res 1024x768 @ 120 Hz lately.
Dips from 120fps are few and far between :)

3ghz should be fine, but you might want to consider getting a after market cooler for the CPU.

press alt crtl delete and check the performance tab to see how many cores you have showing you if its a Q6600 or a e6600

or right click my computer and click properties will also show you the CPU type.

Source engine games are hugely CPU intensive, so your best bet is to either Overclock your current CPU to something like 3ghz or buy a e8400, which is 3ghz at standard but will overclock to 4ghz.

you should find all the help you need here for overclocking if you choose that route.

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=7

good luck :)

Erm I don't know if its the E6600 or the Q6600 :x

Would I need more fans if Im overclocking? What would be safe? 3.0GHz?

Cheapest way is overclock that cpu.
(Assuming you don't break it, then it's expensive.)
Many people have q6600's running at 3.6ghz
3.0Ghz is a near certainty.

Bear in mind you need a crt to have 100fps displayed.

Edit:
Rereading your post you probably have the e6600 right?
Which might not be such a good overclocker, but 3.0Ghz should still
be achievable, assuming your motherboard is suitable.
