Yeah, the build you currently have is massive overkill

i5's on the 1156 socket, and a GTX 460 are the most you're going to need, alter everything else to fit with that though, and you've got a good build

If you actually want to go for overkill though, fair play ;)

I have a core i5-750 + coolermaster 212 plus which I am selling since I don't need my desktop anymore. I also have a P7P55D motherboard which I used for it. I don't know anything about motherboards though, I know it's compatible with the i5 just don't know how good it is (think it cost around £100). Add me on friends or w/e if you are interested.

Had them lying around for a couple of months now, too lazy to make an ebay auction :c

The difference isn't huge, but it's worth waiting a couple of weeks for when you're essentially paying the same amount of money.

Wait for the Intel Sandy Bridge chipset coming out in January. Prices will cost the same, but Sandy Bridge offers a huge performance boost over socket 1156 & 1366.

And check out this benchmark:

http://images.anandtech.com/graphs/sandybridgepreview_082710002107/24411.png

The i5-2400 ($184) almost beats an i7 980X Extreme (almost $1000, granted it would do better at rendering and stuff). The 2400 doesn't even have Turbo enabled during that benchmark!

I also agree that if you're only going to be gaming, I would just save yourself the money and go for the i5.

Are you building a rig for gaming only ? If so, dont buy a i7 based machine, you are wasting money. Get i5 system instead. Say i5-760, overclock it a bit, and you have much more horsepower for tf2 (and other games) and you save a lot of money. In general i5 *lynnfield* cpu's are better for games then i7.

One good cooler is Cooler Master Hyper 212+, which is also very cheap.
