The pickup actually advertises itself as div 5+ skill which is another way of saying 'You need to be familiar with the basics'.
I honestly wouldn't recommend lobbies. They can be fun but you can get really unlucky and have someone on your team who isn't patient and ragequits/rages/otherrageissuehere facing a new player.
The nlpg is in my opinion (and experience) the best place to start. That is also where teams get formed/players picked up if you're aiming for that.

In any case, have fun!

Since you have no previous experience whatsoever and only have few hours of tf2 I would recommend u to play lobbies before moving to tf2pickups ash there are more experienced players in pickups than they are in lobby.
Sup dear etf2l community,

As the title already hints at I'm kinda new to competitive tf2 as in I've never played a competitive match in my life.
I do have a few tf2 hours played tho so I decided to give it a try , after all it could potentially be fun right?

The only problem is that nearly none of my friends play tf2 and the ones who do don't seem to be interested in trying it competitively.
This leaves me with no team and 1v6 probably wouldn't work out too well.

I've read the newcomer guide on this site and in case someone has no team it suggested playing mixes to find one/gain experience.
While I am familar with how a mix works the service for this (pixeltf2.pickup) seems to be down and I don't know of an alternative.

I also figured that it would be a waste of time trying to apply for a team in the "Players Seeking Team" section since I don't have any comp exp and thus won't be getting any reply anytime soon.

Now my question is:

Is there any other way of getting to play a mix? Whether it's IRC chat or another site like pixeltf2,doesn't really matter as long as it helps me find a random team to play with.

Thanks in advance for the answers :D
