After a certain version number ALL nvidia drivers will cause crashes on 7series cards in TF2, I reported it to valve way back when (several dozen times) and no one bothered to fix it, sorry I can't remember which version it is though (I've been trying hard to forget) Best thing to do is try drivers from the early days of TF, versions 16x.xx for example, you can get older versions here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_nvidia_forceware_xp/ pro tip: don't buy nvidia.

It used to happen not only in TF2 (locked at 640x480 @ 256 colors), but now I'm using the newest release and it works fine.
