Maybe when that happens, a random spectator player could be automatically assigned to the empty spot?

I think this is a good idea; I, for one, wanted to get into competitive play for almost 1 year now but I never considered myself good enough and also I'm afraid of being bashed and possibly banned from the pickup channel due to sucking. So I think getting into matches with random people and with no fear of consequences would make up a good start. I may be one of the few freaks who feels like this though.

Only skill restrictions that are in place in pickup1 are that we expect new players to have a basic understanding of how competitive gameplay works, be that from playing in a clan, watching demo's, or live games. And having roughly 20 hours gameplay in the main class you wish to play.

Very easy to achieve for most players, and admins + players in the channel will usually be quite willing to answer any questions you may have, I'am anyway :P

Read and follow the rules and you will have no problem :)

I dont think you can be banned from pickup1. The skill there is so low, it can impossible decrease.

If you want to be competitive, just do it. Most people start on the bottom. Find a clan or play pickups. Try to learn for your mistakes when you die. And take the advice other players give you.

you could replace them with bots like in l4d

the l4d bots follow u and shoot when they detect something... u cant exactly program tactics in a tf2 bot, plus playing vs bots is just lol :D

that a joke? lol its not a "fix" its an addition. i like playing with friends off of irc as well as without mumble. especially when just trying to get a map tested. this would just help set up scrims and pugs for people who dont know or dont want to use irc.

ideally itll get more pubbers familiar with 6v6 to help grow the community

Why would it be more popular as the pickup channels?

It would probably allow `pubbers` to play some 6v6 matches without breaking a sweat.
Quite like the idea for the general public, but not for the competitive scene itself.

This!

It's a fantastic idea, and I think it would really help people get into 6v6 easier. There are a lot of pubbers who want to play TF2 at a higher level but cba to install IRC & Mumble.
