Have you not seen the publicity they get with the updates?

All companies know that good publicity = priceless.

If they'd run valve like some of you imagine they do then there would be no tf2 cause they'd file for bankruptcy a looong time ago.

I dont quite get it where does my age fit in, but whatever...

First of all, I think they dont want to just give up on TF2 so easily, becouse it became more than a game for them. After all, it has been in production 12 (???) years and making a game like that wouldnt be so easy.
Secondly, sure, the competitive scene isnt as big as CS:S or DoD:S, but I have no doubt that TF2 has THE biggest public scene, and as far as I noticed, 90% of updates are meant towards it, and not comp gameplay.
And finally, I think you got me wrong: I'm not saying that valve is a bad company nor that they dont care about anything but money. I just want to say, that they dont update the game JUST for the people- valve gets more than enough from those updates too.

Dunno how old you are nor do i know how long you've been gaming EXM but believe me i don't know many other games (even non valve games) where they cared that much about what the community/public want or think...

The funny thing is sure its promotion to valve and promotion to the actual game Team fortress 2 but i really don't think Robin Walker himself has that as his intention, seems to me that he actually wants to listen/care to what we as a community want, rather than doing it so more money is made and $$$$$$$$$ etc because lets face it Valve could just go out and make another game and do well in it so why continue with TF2? it's not exactly huge compared to cod or css and so on? :)

Hey valve might even respond to the whining TF2 players about the self -damage bug that was posted this morning and send an update 2night!

fyi - if they are to update it 2night it will be around midnight GMT thats 01:00 CET for those caring etc...

Cheers

But everytime and update is released, more people buy it, people buy the game after having to wait a month for non-steam server updates and probably the most important thing: that is THE best advertising you could get (imo). Also, by keeping players playing TF2, they make Steam more popular as a product (shop), so more companies want to get their games and adds on steam which also get them profit (idk, just guessing...)

Thats why they do those updates. Not becouse valve loves or that we're lucky. It's all about profit.

@HTE
No. Those TOTALY free mmorpgers and even fps'. Those that you dont even need to buy (though they have nasty case of "Item shops"...).

The difference you are missing is that valve does not gain any direct money by adding content for us since we already paid for the game when we bought it. That in sharp contrast to mmorpg's where money can be made from those players by means of subscription fee's or mini-transactions(item shops).

One of the reasons valve is releasing update's is to provide a service that people appreciate. If people like the services they will be more likely to buy games from valve and use valve's products like steam. Piracy is also reduced if people know a game will be supported with updates.
