I'm a bit late to this discussion but this RJ-water "feature" has been there for quite a while. I've noticed this about a year ago on the original skyscraper maps 1-5. All these maps have water layer at the bottom to prevent falldamage. About a year ago I noticed you suddenly got an extra boost whem RJ'ing from the water. I'm surprised this knowledge isn't well spread.

But then again the skyscraper maps are rarely played on jumpservers these days.

P.S
There's a also a spot in the leftcorner of the water on 2fort (both sides) that will give you a super boost even underwater. Although I think it's combined with RJ off the wall there

I am also confused with this matter.

Why are you not allowed to build a teleporter in your spawn on gravelpit?

But at the same time, allowed to do this rocket jump?

Not that I care much. But I see Compton's point here.

edit: we assume here that this rjump was coded intentionally. How do we know that the gravelpit creator didn't intentionally leave this spot to build a teleporter?

It's a rule; rules shouldn't leave room for opinions. Otherwise you could never surely know whether a bug is acceptable or not.

According to the rule, bunny hoppers would be making a punishable offense. That's my point, the rule is stupid and should be changed.

Before you quote the rulebook, it's also good to know a bit about the engine you're playing on.

This "feature" has worked for over 10 years in teamfortress, since p_speed is increased when exiting entity "water". Knowing a bit of quake-physics, increasing the entity speed by Y, will give you X more "momentum" (wrong word here, but check quake-source for reference) from any external calculations done to the player entity. This is why you get such a great "boost" from that particular spot.

Ask any long-time TF-player how concing from water affects you compared to ground-jumps (if they have no idea what you're talking about, tell them original well and 'WELL-MED, LOL, JUMP, LOL, ROOF').

This is neither a bug nor a "new feature" -- it's a derivative / heritage from the quake-code from which source/ob derives from.

Use and abuse at will is my humble opinion -- but that's just me, since if this does not hold true, all "bunnyjumpers" in the past were cheaters too. Building teleporters in spawn in BUG ABUSE, taking advantage of engine physics is not.

(EDIT: forgot, IMHO.)

Do you punish them?

No, its a slight bug, Its not really an easily fixed one either as it would quite obviously have far too many "what if?"'s involved. Think like the spy backstab/facestab and that stupid new quick stab crap. Along the lines of that.

Seriously, if we thought like that, we wouldn't have the concepts of rj or bunny hopping at all. This obviously doesn't fall under the category of bug-abuse.

This is not a bug, it's a feature!

It doesn't make sense that a soldier jumping from the water goes a lot further than a soldier jumping from the ground. Therefore it's quite safe to assume that it wasn't meant to be this way by the developers and therefore it's a bug.

You're actually pretty much saying what I had to say.

My point wasn't that this trick shouldn't be allowed. My point was that the rule is stupid and this bug is a good way to point that out. Actually when I first came into ETF2L and read the rules, I could barely hold myself laughing when reading the "bug-using" rule.

People say that this rule applies to some bugs http://etf2l.org/forum/general/topic-4818/page-1/, but not to others (this one), while it clearly states that none of the bugs are allowed to be used. And the wording doesn't leave any space for whether it benefits only one team or if it has any effect in the game. So technically, even crabwalking would be a punishable offense.

Of course it would be stupid to enforce this rule, but shouldn't rules be enforced? So I'm suggesting that admins take time to change the rule.

No bigger bug than all the points on maps where model clipping means you can hide stickes, really isn't that big a deal. Both teams can do it, isn't going to break the game.

The best you can hope for is to force a team to push the side without health pack which doesn't guarantee you'll win middle. You can't expect to do that all the time either given you'll be exposed without medic for a while.
