What geten said.

One of the deeper teamwork things related with the heavy is, that if the enemy is focus firing on the heavy, they won't be firing the rest of your team that much. You can use this to create openings. Or fail miserably.
As an utility class to attack / defend last points, on gravelpit defense in general, and on cp_well middle, the heavy can do wonders. Sometimes even on badlands middle. Shithouse fatty-surprise! :D But if you don't have a very skilled heavy, do not bother.

From my experience with playing the heavy a lot, the usefulness of the fatty depends on the ability to predict the opponent, and being able to outwit and surprise them constantly, and the chances of that reduce greatly vs better teams. They just don't give openings that easily.

Having played heavy a, lot my opinion is that heavy is a slight disadvantage. You can't use heavy all the time, like on mid cap it's best to be able to make do with 2 soldiers rather than the other way around. So if you're even going to consider replacing one soldier with a heavy, then it's also crucial he knows how to play soldier good enough to be a soldier you can rely on.

Geten has experienced these advantages with heavy:
- You can win uber vs uber duels easier. You can dps something crazy in close quarters and even kill off soldiers before the medic can target the wounded soldier. For this reason he can be awesome in attacking and defending last cap. A lot of times, we've ubered before them but we've still won due to that a soldier can't take down a fully charged heavy.
-Medic has a good bodyguard. With the minigun spinning, the medic can cover behind him while he tears ass.
- Blow up stickies. Yeah. That's really handy at times.
- Close quarters in general. Once you get him close and fully healed he can do good damage, forcing the enemies to have their attention on him while other classes jump on them. I've also found that enemies underestimate the heavy and put themselves in situations where they loose a player. One advantage of playing an unconvential lineup.

Disadvantages:
- Mobility, obviously. He's fat and can't get to the front fast enough at times. And if it's something that increases in higher level gameplay then that's speed. Enemies can dodge him easily and he can't dodge them. You'll also have to bear in mind while his hp is huge, he can't dodge spam so having that hp doesn't have to mean he'll always live longer. And speaking of mobility, he can't move when he fires, and since he's so slow he'll need to fight in order to keep off enemies and to keep his medic alive. In a game where the sniper can stay basically untouchable at distances, a fully charged shot can bring him down.
- His attack isn't splash. That makes shooting around corners impossible, while the soldier and demoman can spam and the scout attack with huge damage from nowhere.

So if a team got soldiers that don't happend to be exceptional heavies, then stick to two soldiers. And it's also important that the team can support a heavy, which they in many cases don't. A mix of soldier and heavy ought to be optional, though.

- Very good at taking down the enemy scouts

Was during that week (or 2) when Natasha was working properly.

2 over healed scouts can take a heavy head on, with one of them not taking any damage and other having high chance to survive

That being said - heavy is good choice for turtling

strong point, actually, but it's very dependent on the skill of players, too
