I think here is your problem, you need way more ram than that to even boot vista!

Sorry just had to :(

I get this problem as well. I have exactly the same hardware as you but 2gb ram. I think its a problem with vista tbh. I normally have to reboot, but my game crashed all the time. XP is coming back :>

Recently I have been getting very frequent crashes. It always crashes on the the "message of the day" screen just as you join the server.

8/10 times it just says "hl2.exe has stopped working".

Some times its says "failed to lock vertex buffer in cmesh dx8:lock vertex buffer".

other times it says "Engine Error!- Can't load lump xxxx ,allocation of xxxxx bytes failed."

Things I have tried:

Increasing the paged pool memory cache

http://www.windowsreference.com/windows-vista/how-to-increase-the-file-system-memory-cache-in-vista2003/

Turning on/off multicore support. Turning off anti virus. Verifying local content, defrag tf2 folder etc.

I have vista 64, 4 megs ram, q6600, 8800 gtx.

Any help would be great as its really annoying constantly crashing. I have .mdmp files but have no idea how to read them, I found this link though.
