SUPER NECRO!

Finally seem to have fixed this problem thanks to this handy tip from Chris http://www.sevenforums.com/gaming/31980-lag-online-games-windows-7-a.html

And this one from Masquatto http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1093560

My game is much more smooth and stable now, although the weird new fps drops from the recent updates persist.

I've tried a bunch of tweaks and solutions, but these two have had the biggest impact by far. Much love!

I tried disabling direct sound, cleaning for dust, using wired connection, updating video drivers, downgrading video drivers, deframmenting, updating sound drivers and still got those freezes.

First i played on wireless, and that was the problem. I plugged in my cable and it was gone. A few weeks ago those freezes came back, and my cable wasnt plugged in perfectly and there was loads of dust around. Just remove it and see if your cable's plugged in good.
