The issue is not with the cfg file.

My guess is that the
exec
command has been aliased to do "?", which does nothing and that's why it appears as an unknown command.

So I'm not sure on how you can revert an alias to its original command, but I think adding -autoconfig (not -autoexec) to your launch options might revert it, just make sure you remove the -autoconfig after you started the game once.

] exec autoexec.cfg
Unknown command "?"

I don't even have any weird characters and it refuses to execute any new commands I put into the file. I've tried creating another .cfg file and do for example "exec Fuxx" or "exec Fuxx.cfg" but the same Unknown command "?" appears.

It's detecting the file, just refusing to do anything with it

Recently I deleted all my cfg files and went back to default so I could get broesel's crosshair switcher. I kept a backup of my old files and put the autoexec back into the config folder but it no longer works (I have comanglia's fps config in autoexec btw). When I type 'exec autoexec' into console it says unknown command.

Before anyone asks it definitely has .cfg and is in the correct folder. I have tried to verify game files twice.
