So i actually implement this in all my huds because i play without sound when i pub and still wanna know if i hit them so here's my explanation:
First you gonna need this font file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/32v9jtnp8gijx12/crtfc.ttf
put it into the resource folder of your hud
next go into the clientscheme and copy this: http://pastebin.com/Y91xwuQJ into the Fonts section
now scroll way to the bottom and paste this: http://pastebin.com/LYV0QKCA with the next following number.
now go under scripts/hudlayout.res and copy this into it: http://pastebin.com/W8EU7rJa
now go into hudanimations and paste this into it: http://pastebin.com/t8i5spw6
Can you reupload the font?

Theoretically, if you could make a font file where one letter would be looking like 'hit!', you could than add it to the hud overlay and make it's color invisible, than in the animation file make it so that whenever you hit someone it sets the color to a different one than switches back to invisible.

I thought it worked the same way Custom Crosshairs did? The hitmarkers in CoD and other similar games are like 4 little lines that pop up around your crosshair whenever you hit someone, i imagine this to work similar with this new animation in TF2? You could have anything pop up though, if you customise it?

Should work, just make a custom font with that open X, centralize it and make it go like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hp4JzyMel4I

The only way this could work is a custom texture. But sv_pure 2 won't allow you to use custom textures.
